Horsham Water & Sewer 2012 sewer televising, joint testing and grout project

The Horsham Water & Sewer Authority 2012 sewer televising, joint testing, and grouting project involves flushing, televising, joint testing, and grout sealing where necessary, nearly 300,000’ of sanitary sewer main and is being conducted primarily in the eastern portion of the Township. On the north side of Horsham Road, this includes all areas east of 611 and Maple Avenue. South of Horsham Road, the work area extends between Norristown Road and Blair Mill Road. In total, the project is expected to take one year to complete. The contractor performing the work is Sewer Specialty Services Co., Inc. of Leicester, New York. Their working hours are Monday through Thursday beginning at approximately 7AM through no later than 7PM.

The purpose of the project is to identify and repair sources of infiltration and inflow of ground water and surface water into the sewer system. These extraneous flows consume system and treatment capacity and add to overall operating and treatment costs. Eliminating extraneous flows which would not otherwise require treatment is part of Horsham Water & Sewer Authority’s ongoing efforts to keep its sewer rates as low as possible.

Over the course of the next year and subject to future modification, the flushing and televising will proceed through approximately eight “quadrants” of the Township, followed by a separate joint testing and repair crew. The amount of time spent in each quadrant is dependent on the quadrant size, the length of the sewer within the quadrant, and the amount of required joint repair work. As a frame of reference, under normal conditions, approximately 4,000 LF of sewer can be flushed and televised in a single work day.

Some areas of the sewer system are in easements and weather conditions can impact accessibility to these areas. To every extent possible, properties with easements will be contacted by mail in advance of the work. The contractor will make every effort to remain in a single quadrant before moving on to the next area with two exceptions; 1) many of the larger diameter interceptor sewers traverse multiple quadrants and specialized equipment is required as part of the operation, therefore, interceptor sewers will be worked in sections, by the full run of the sewer. 2) sewers located in major roadways where traffic control is required may also be conducted outside of the respective quadrant. Those anticipated areas are represented on the plan below in green.

In extremely rare instances, you may notice a slight sewage odor, or “gurgling” in your drains as the sewer lines are flushed in preparation for televising. Should this occur, you should flush all toilets and run water in all sinks and bathtubs to ensure that water is in all plumbing traps. We also recommend that you make sure all toilet lids are closed and if you have basement windows in your home, you may wish to open them slightly.

Information regarding successive quadrants, interceptor sewers, or major roadway areas will be provided as work nears completion in the preceding quadrant.
